About

Hello! This blog is about words. I usually post on Fridays with one word that’s new to me (though rarely new-new*), and with a word history that I find surprising or delightful.

I’ve been doing this since 2015, but on a different blog: mikepope.com/blog. But that venerable blog, started in 2003, covers a wide variety of topics. This one, on the other hand, concentrates just on words.

I’m a technical writer and editor, with more than 35 years’ of experience in the software industry. I’m interested in languages; I’ve studied German and Spanish, and these days I dabble in Latin. I’ve posted some videos on YouTube that show you how to work with styles in Microsoft Word. (Start with Why use styles?) I wrote a “book” about moveable chords on the ukulele.

* The expression new-new is an example of contrastive-focus reduplication. See? This blog is about words.
